In a new book, Liza Mundy explores the world of The Richer Sex. This is a world where women are better educated than men, and increasingly earn more than men.

You’ve probably gleaned some of these patterns before, but the effect of digesting this book is to see a significant social shift in action. Women make up about 57 percent of US university graduates, but about 62 percent in Saudi Arabia, around 62 percent in Canada and, increasingly, a similar majority elsewhere in the world like in Central and Eastern Europe. In large US cities today, young women outearn men, as is true in Japan. Among married US couples, in 40 percent of households women outearn their husbands, and in a growing number are the sole breadwinners.

As male jobs in construction and factory work have faded, fields where women excel (e.g., education, health care) have fared better and also project better growth, meaning that some of the current patterns will continue. Here, drawing upon her interviews and findings, we ask: how are men faring in this world of the better educated, richer female?
