Emma Peel (Excerpts from “Emma Peel - feminist icon” by Elizabeth Eggleston)

Screen 4 of 9

It has though been most apparent that the character was given real depth and superiority above the sexism of the world she came from by the actress who played her. The initial choice for the role of Emma Peel was a more glamorous actress, Elizabeth Shepherd, who sadly lacked the intelligent and comic spark to give the character depth. Diana Rigg not only had the sexuality but her superior intellect transformed the Emma Peel character. Emma Peel begins to look less like a 1960’s icon in comparison with the young women of the time. She was a widow, in her late twenties, running her own business and with an extremely high I.Q. Men admired her and wanted her but she was strong enough to distance herself from the typical style of a sexual icon. Women could only admire her qualities, the qualities that made her feminine, strong, intelligent and the kind of icon that women could aspire to look and behave like.

The Avengers knowingly played on the playful sexuality between the main stars and the introduction of leather defined this.
