But it is Dietrich's magnetism, her way of sinking her eyes behind a curtain, her way of teasing men as she flaunts her sexuality, and her ability to blend just the right tones of ‘Men cluster to me like moths around a flame. And if their wings burn, I know I'm not to blame’ as she sings “Falling in Love Again”, a song that put individuality into the character and would become Dietrich’s trademark.
Lola begins her game of cat and mouse. Babying the Professor by combing his hair, then asking him how beautiful he thinks she is. She asks him if he will assist her as she prepares for her show. She has the professor hold her make-up and she blows some powder in his face and then treats him like a baby again. Then she has him hold her cigarette case as she smokes but he drops the case and the cigarettes spill all over the floor, under her dressing table. Lola commands that he picks them up and we watch from floor level as he climbs under the table and picks up her cigarettes. While he is under there, the professor sees Lola’s sexy legs, which she seductively crosses.
It is very apparent that the Professor is a sexual prude with little or no experience with women. He looks uncomfortable around Lola, yet he is also mesmerized by her. Lola’s outfits show off her bare thighs and her legs are nicely framed by stockings长袜 — a close-fitting covering for the leg and her thighs by garters吊袜带 — a band that holds up a stocking. Lola is a free spirit and she is more than just a cabaret singer. It is hinted that she will sleep with a male admirer if the price is right.
