Rath actually thinks his stuffy status as a "herr professor" is looked up to by her. And he falls for the mocking deception of Lola wearing a proper bridal gown for their wedding. He thinks he has conquered her. Thus the crux of the drama is the explosion of this ridiculous conceit with the denouement of Lola's cruel perversion of the purpose of sex. Suddenly and shockingly she shows Rath on their wedding night that her seeming interest in him was but means to delude and dominate him.
She teases him, looking around the curtain, and she asks him to hand her the small suitcase. She knows it is unlocked so when he grabs it, the case flings open and some provocative postcards spill onto the floor. Lola teasingly humiliates him about how clumsy he is. The professor then notices what is on the postcards. They are of Lola in suggestive poses. She sells them to make money (which is how Rath’s students came into their possession).
