Backstage we see Lola talking down to him. Even the other members of the group talk down to him as they have no respect for a man who allows his wife to treat him so. Professor Rath tells Lola that he hates this life and would rather die like a dog in the streets than spend another day like this. He storms out of the room, in a brief display of manhood and self-respect, only to quickly return to Lola. She orders him to assist her as she dresses for her next show. He is ordered to get her stockings长袜 — a close-fitting covering for the leg and roll them over her foot and onto her legs. Next she orders him to get her curler as she wants him to do her hair. The curler is too hot so she verbally scolds him. He tests it against the pages of a calendar. This signifies the passage of time, which we see changes from days to months to the year 1925 to finally the year 1929.
