I sent a polite letter of introduction along with a self-addressed-stamped-envelope to the magazine’s Los Angles P.O. Box, and waited for weeks before I received a reply. It took me days to get up the nerve to dial the number, when I did, I was greeted by a recorded message, which invited me to leave my number and best times for a callback. I didn’t have to wait long, as I had hardly hung up the phone when it rang. It was her. She had been screening her calls.

She had a slight German accent, she was direct, with very little patience for chit-chat. She told me her hourly rate and asked me if I was free Saturday afternoon. I was so nervous my mouth went dry and I could hardly speak. I agreed to the Saturday appointment. I’ll never forget our brief conversation.
