Now to the situation with your friends. I am sure this woman means no harm to those cats but she is one of those people who doesn’t believe that animals belong in the house. There are many people like this (I am certainly not one of them as I live with both dogs and cats, and wouldn’t have it any other way) and it usually has to do with a cleanliness issue, more than a dislike for animals. What I would suggest is for this man to come up with a solution which will be acceptable to his wife. He knows her personality and her heart so he needs to put some thought into this problem and solve this problem in a way that will be pleasing to his wife, and be an act of kindness to the cats.

Perhaps he could put heat in the garage where the cats can live in the winter. Or perhaps he could build a separate structure which will have heat, like a dog box. Cats are not dumb animals. They will go into a warm shelter to get out of the wind and cold. I would suggest that he communicate with his wife and get her approval and input to a solution.
