I also respectfully disagree with your characterization of your domineering mother as a woman who was selfish or self-focused. The opposite was more than likely the case. She probably suffered from low self-esteem and her unhealthy domineering ways were the manifestation of her emotional scars and her low self-image. A woman who views herself as worthy of a man’s love and submission usually has a healthy self-image and rarely will you find a woman with a healthy self-image emotionally abusing others. A person who snaps at others, yells, screams, has a temper, or tries to dominate in an unnatural and unhealthy way is demonstrating a defense mechanism to protect themselves from experiencing more hurt and pain. If your mother emotionally abused members of your family, it was more than likely because she suffered from a low-self image and she didn’t think she was worthy of a man’s love or submission.
