A. Before I address your question about gender identity, I would like to address your initial question about society being afraid to discuss these types of issues. The bottom line is that there is a large segment of society that is uncomfortable with these issues. If only we were all the same, life would be so much easier. But the fact is that we are all unique. No two snowflakes are the same because God is a God of variety and complexity. No two humans have the same fingerprints or the same DNA. We are all unique and our uniqueness should be celebrated, not feared.
The sexuality of humans is very complex. That is why many religions and many governments try to regulate it. Unfortunately it is human nature to look upon others that are different than us as being weird and even perverted. Just be thankful you live in the United States in 2006. As isolated as you feel today, there are places in the world that you would be more afraid, and imagine if you had lived 100 years ago? At least you can visit a therapist and discuss your feelings and your desires. At least today you do have options.
