Catwoman
Screen 5 of 6
While the other villains in Batman's universe are recognizable even in their first appearance, it took several years for The Cat to become Catwoman. Batman creator Bob Kane's girlfriend would pose in various costumes while he tried out new names until finally he settled on the name Catwoman and the Catwoman costume of purple knee length dress, green cape, purple high heel boots and a purple half mask. She also acquired a cat-o-nine-tails whip. Thus equipped, Catwoman would commit a series of cat-related crimes to the delight of male comic book readers everywhere. Catwoman wears this costume until her disappearance from the Batbooks in 1954.
The Comics Code meant a de-emphasis on sex and violence during the fifties and early sixties. Catwoman doesn't reappear in the Batbooks until the late 1960’s as the popularity of the Batman TV series in 1966 brought with it a renewed interest in Catwoman. On her return to the comics in the late sixties, Catwoman was drawn to resemble Julie Newmar's TV version.
