Ms Kathleen's Movie Review

Screen 5 of 6

That was how Tim Burton chose to disclose Ed’s trademark transvetism. Some people point to the movie scene in ‘Glen or Glenda’ where Glen (actually played by Ed) wears his sister’s dress for a Halloween party and, as the line goes, “then one day, it wasn’t Halloween anymore”.

Others say that Ed’s mother dressed him in drag as some sort of punishment. No one really knows for sure. But it became his second lifelong love next to the silver screen and, right behind bad movies, the second most famous thing he became known for.

When it was announced that Tim Burton was doing a film about the life of Ed Wood most in Hollywood thought it would be a campy comedy. A spoof, if you will, on the life and movie making career of Edward D. Wood, JR. But what Burton created was quite the opposite. Burton has, as did Wood, an undying love for film and discovered that his life story would make a wonderfully inspiring if somewhat delusional subject for a movie.

Good choice on Burton’s part as the movie was nominated for and won two academy awards. Martin Landau won Best Supporting Actor (1994). The other Oscar went to Rick Baker for Best Make-up Artist (1994).
