You were not the best boyfriend for her if you could not differentiate between a Church service and a secular play. She was taking Church seriously but you were not interested. I give you credit for being willing to submit to her wishes of Church counseling but I can definitely see why you two parted ways. Church was (and I am sure still is) serious business for Shelly.

Abstinence before marriage is to be admired. Few can achieve it and even those that try often fail, as the flesh is truly weak and the sex drive is very strong. In Biblical times, people were married at thirteen and fourteen years old, so the waiting period was not that long. For people in modern society who wait until they are in their twenties and thirties before they wed, it takes a deep spiritual commitment along with great willpower. That is why people who remain chaste until marriage should be admired and respected (not laughed at or ridiculed). It is much easier to have sex in our society than it is to refrain. It takes a tremendously strong person to refrain in these modern times.
