Ms Kathleen's Movie Review
Screen 2 of 6
The movie opens with yet again another flop (this time on the stage) for Ed. Always the optimist, Ed cheers up the cast and crew over a drink at the local watering hole by spinning things in their favor. Later, while alone at his apartment with live-in lover Dolores he wonders aloud about the direction his career is taking. As Ed is speaking Dolores rummages through her closet. She is looking for her angora sweaters and asks herself where they could have gotten to. This is the first peek we get into Ed’s obsession.
This issue’s review was written with the entire subculture of cross-dressers in mind. You see, Edward D. Wood Jr. was a well-known transvestite in addition to being billed “the world’s worst film director of all time”. While the movie concentrates mainly on the best-known period of his life in the 1950s, when he made such jaw-dropping clunkers as 'Glen or Glenda', 'Bride of the Monster' and 'Plan 9 from Outer Space,' so horrifyingly bad they now have earned a huge cult following, it also focuses on both his transvestism and his touching friendship with the once great but now ageing and unemployed horror star Bela Lugosi.
And so goes the tagline for ‘Ed Wood’….Movies were his passion. Women were his inspiration. Angora sweaters were his weakness.
